AMD has focused greater efforts on its top chips because of market shortages

AMD CEO Lisa Su admitted at a conference that shortages in the chip market have led to focusing on its top-tier chips at the expense of its cheaper offerings.

This helps explain why he didn’t rush to offer his new APU lineup to consumers, but also why models like the Ryzen 5 3400G are so hard to find.

Lisa Su was answering a question about whether AMD would make more profit this year if it had more capacity. His response suggested that, like most semiconductor companies, demand was now exceeding supply, and therefore that was probably the case. So, it becomes a matter of prioritization.

There are some computers that we are leaving unattended.” Su says during the conference. “I would say particularly if you look at some of the segments in the PC market, sort of the lower end of the PC market, we prioritize some of the high end commercial SKUs, gaming SKUs and that sort of thing.”

Market Changes

It makes sense that AMD is focusing on where it can make the most profit, but it’s still not a happy read for anyone trying to build a cost-effective machine right now.

We’re starting to see some system integrators focusing on gaming PCs with integrated graphics, simply because there are so few graphics cards to fill the machines. It would be great if DIY gamers had the option to build their own machines for cheaper prices.

AMD is in a very good position financially right now and recently updated its 37% year-over-year growth guidance at the beginning of the year to 50% year-over-year growth now.

There was also good news from the conference, with Lisa Su stating, “I believe you will see more and more capacity online as we go through the next two quarters.”
